Health Spotlight for November: Pancreatic Cancer Awareness
The National Pancreas Foundation Black/African American Initiative will address these issues with the hope of decreasing the incidence of pancreatic disease in the Black/African American community.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers with significant unmet needs. Awareness matters: early detection saves lives and equal access to care can make a profound difference.
Many studies suggest that environmental and socioeconomic factors have contributed to the increased risk of pancreatic disease among African Americans. Risk factors include genetics, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and obesity.
Pancreatic cancer symptoms can vary depending on the stage and location of the tumor. Some common symptoms include:
Early Symptoms:
- Often asymptomatic
- May experience subtle changes, such as:
• Indigestion or heartburn
• Mild abdominal pain
• Fatigue
Later Symptoms:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Dark urine
- Light-colored stools
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Back pain, especially radiating to the shoulder or hip
- Bloating
- Fever
- New-onset diabetes
