Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem. PTSD can only develop after you go through or see a life-threatening event. It’s normal to have stress reactions to these types of events, and most people start to feel better after a few weeks. If symptoms last longer than a month and are causing problems in your life, it could be PTSD.

June is here, and with it comes an important opportunity to shine a light on a condition that affects millions worldwide: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD Awareness Month, observed every June, is a crucial time to educate ourselves, reduce stigma, and foster a more supportive environment for those living with its effects.
What is PTSD? It’s More Than “Just Stress.”
At its core, PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a terrifying event. While it’s often associated with combat veterans, it’s critical to understand that PTSD can affect anyone who has gone through trauma. This can include:
- Natural disasters: Earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires
- Serious accidents: Car crashes, industrial accidents
- Physical or sexual assault: Rape, domestic violence
- Terrorist attacks
- Child abuse or neglect
- Sudden, unexpected death of a loved one:
- Serious medical events: Surgeries, life-threatening illnesses
It’s not simply “stress” that goes away with time. PTSD involves a complex interplay of psychological, biological, and neurological changes that can persist long after the traumatic event has ended.
