About Rev. Dr. A. W. Anthony Mays:  Rev. Dr. A. W. Anthony Mays was born in Taylor, Texas and was reared in Round Rock, Texas. He accepted Christ and was baptized at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Round Rock. In 1969, he accepted his call into the ministry. Dr. Mays attended the public schools of Round Rock Independent School District and became the first African-American to attend the newly integrated Round Rock High School. He continued his education at the University of Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2021, he was honored to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Simmons College of Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. Mays is the former Pastor of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Round Rock, Texas; Antioch Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas and True Vine Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. He became the Pastor of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in 1986.

Over the years, Dr. Mays has served in a number of religious and community positions. He is the former moderator of the East Texas Baptist Association, he served as Vice President of the Texas Baptist Congress of Christian Workers, and, he is past president of the Baptist Ministers’ Union of Austin, Texas. Dr. Mays has also served as Branch President of the NAACP in Wichita Falls, Texas; Home Rule Charter Commissioner of Round Rock, Texas and Planning and Zoning Commissioner of Tyler, Texas. 

Dr. Mays currently serves as Moderator of the St. John’s Regular Baptist District Association. He is an active member of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc.; former Vice Chairman of the Writer’s Conference; and former Staff Writer and congress faculty member of Church School Publications. Dr. Mays serves as the Chairman of the Ministers’ Conference of the Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas under President W. T. Glynn. He has also had the honor to serve as an invited guest preacher for the National Missionary Baptist Convention under President Dr. C.C. Robertson and serve as a program preacher for the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. International under President Dr. Steven John Thurston.

In June 2023, upon retiring from his position as Dean of the Congress of Christian Workers of the National Baptist Convention of America International, Incorporated after serving nearly 20 years, Dr. Mays published his first book, “From The Dean”

Dr. Mays is married to the former Fannie Pearl Urdy. They are the parents of five children, the grandparents of 15 grandchildren and great grandparents of 5.
